San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and fishing villages
INCLUDES Guide, Private transport and Insurance
Type of experience: Nature and culture
Duration: Half day or Full day
We start our day in the fishermen’s village of Bermeo, where we will inmerse ourselves in the history of the town and admire its lovely old streets and colourful port. We then start our hike towards the hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, which legend says that Saint John only took three strides to get to when he landed in Bermeo, leaving his footsprings imprented in the road.
Traveling through the rural environment, following this traditional walk, we pass by the beautifull Chapel of Saint Pelaio and reach a delightful lookout point where you can watch the land and sea do battle, forming cliffs and arches and interesting coastal lines.
From there, we will descend down to the start of the 241 ascending steps to reach the Saint John of Gaztelugatxe hermitage. During the ascention and once at the top, we will have time to admire the views of the coast and to listen to the history of the this small shrine, finding out the significance of this location, it’s place in history and why you must ring the chapel bell three times.
